June 2025 Newsletter

As capitalism continues to decay, the capitalists lose the ability to maintain the appearance of stability. The US empire backs Israel in its illegal war on Iran, the National Guard and the Marines descend on Los Angeles in defense of ICE raids, and the cops can’t help but use force even against the peaceful liberal protests advocating the maintenance of the last few decades’ status quo.

However, these dark and chaotic times also contain the seeds of hope for a new world. Israel’s desperation leads it into an unsustainable war on many fronts, against enemies with increasing ability to fight back. The masses demonstrate their capacity to protect each other from ICE and their police backers. The cops’ use of force only serves to radicalize the people they’re trying to suppress.

DSA is building a movement to end capitalist rule and usher in a new era of peace, prosperity, and democracy. Working class and oppressed people must liberate ourselves, as no one is coming to rescue us. If you’re not a member yet, join today! If you are, this newsletter contains information on our chapter’s current activities. We need your help to make them successful!

Upcoming Events

General Meeting 6/21 Saturday, 12:30 p.m.

823 N A St, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460

  • Luisa M from DSA’s NPC is presenting a Red Talk on Immigration: History of the US Deportation System. Luisa will explain the historical antecedents of issues facing the immigrant justice movement, including how immigration laws  are based in Fugitive Slave Laws, the displacement of indigenous people, and fear of revolutionaries. There is a reason Trump is invoking a law from 1798! Targeting political immigrants is nothing new. Come and learn how DSA can be a national leader in the fight against anti-immigration rhetoric.
  • Call for Nominations: Steering Committee Vacancy. Steering Committee handles the regular operations of our chapter. We meet every two weeks. After we confirm or elect our new Steering Committee member, we will decide who will be Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Communications Chair, and Treasurer for the chapter.

Chapter Updates

Chapter Delegates to National Convention

Convention in Chicago, August 8-9

https://convention2025.dsausa.org/

Delegation Chair: Hazel F

Delegates

  • Hazel F, part of the Red Star caucus, supports transforming DSA into a true socialist party that represents and negotiates on behalf of the working class. She wants DSA to run its own candidates and move away from appealing mainly to the white middle class. Her goal is to recruit directly from grassroots movements and prioritize organizing over broad voter appeal.
  • Rogelio P has been active in the chapter since 2018 and sees a need for DSA to move beyond protesting and working with Democrats. He supports a big-tent DSA with clearer standards for candidate endorsements, including red lines and opposition to imperialism and capitalism. He also wants national DSA to provide more practical support like templates and onboarding, and advocates for tenant organizing and housing as a human right.
  • Howard S is a retired autoworker with decades of experience in union organizing and believes failure has taught him valuable lessons. He wants to focus on labor organizing to challenge capitalism. He wants to attend the convention to network with other autoworkers and promote basic organizing skills.

Alternates

  • Michael believes DSA’s growing strength on the left is a key opportunity to improve conditions for all. He would like to help out his fellow working-class people. He wants to work together with everyone.

Food Shares

Food Shares in Bryant Park are still happening every Sunday and Thursday afternoon. Please join the Chapter Discord to get involved

Recent Happenings

Foodshare Defense Working Group

During Lake Worth Beach’s last commission meeting, some staff and commissioners suggested adding permitting requirements and restrictions for food shares in city property, including reducing frequency to four times a year or even banning them from Bryant Park. We do food shares two times a week, and we provide vital support to the most vulnerable residents in Lake Worth Beach on a regular basis. Sharing food in public is also an essential act of political speech. Join us in our organizing against potential crackdowns on our biweekly foodshare in the park!

Vigil at Krome Detention Center

On May 24th, activists and community members gathered at Krome North Service Processing Center in Miami, Florida, to remember and honor those who have lost their lives in the hands of ICE and the migrant detention system.

Below are the names of only some of those killed by ICE and the immigration system in 2025 and recent years:

  • Brayan Garzón-Rayo
  • Nhon Nguc Nguyen
  • Marie Ange Blaise
  • Abelardo Avelleneda-Delgado
  • Maksym Chernayak
  • Serawit Gezahegn Dejene
  • Genry Ruiz Guillen
  • Juan Alexis Tineo-Martinez

As the sun began to set, participants gathered at the intersection of SW 12th Street and Krome Avenue, where they lit candles – both real and LED – in remembrance. Led in prayer by members of the American Indian Movement – FL, the group walked together single-file down 12th Street, carrying white carnations. Upon reaching the gates of the detention center, they placed the flowers and candles as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the immigration detention system.

After returning to the intersection, speakers from American Indian Movement – FL, Florida Valkyries, Voices of Florida, and the Progressive Caucus addressed the gathered. Music and singing was led by Piper and Nightingale.

Various photojournalists were present, including Giorgio Vera, Cristobal Herrera-Ulashkevich, Rebecca Blackwell, and Dave Decker. A reporter from Univision provided news coverage.

Workers’ Assembly

Inventing an “enemy within” is one strategy that the Trump administration is using to try to redirect unrest away from his administration. Blaming a minority group to divide the working class is a tried-and-true tactic of the billionaire class, who are actually to blame for our suffering under capitalism.

While the Democrats sit back and do nothing to stop these attacks, working people have no time to lose! We need a fighting labor movement that puts the slogan “an injury to one is an injury to all” into practice.

Here in South Florida, a collection of working class individuals and activist organizations have reached a consensus on the need to build workers assemblies. We see workers assemblies as one vehicle for building the type of labor movement that the working class needs to lead an offensive against the far-right.

Join us as we form an organizing committee to replicate the model of the Southern Workers Assembly here in South Florida.

Palestine Solidarity

Comptroller Abruzzo, who has invested 700 million dollars of property taxes in Israel Bonds’ has worked with Israel lobbyists to pass a bill in the Florida House of Representatives that is in direct response to The Internationalist Law Center’s lawsuit against his bonds investment. The bill makes it so that local governments can’t have investment policies banning investments in financially risky bonds (Read more here)

Abruzzo is also a finalist to be the new County Administrator of Palm Beach County, which would allow him to manage a larger pool of taxpayers’s dollars. We want to stop BOTH of these things from happening with the action items listed below:

  • ACTION 1: Sign this petition urging Governor DeSantis not to sign Abruzzo’s bill into law and for reps who signed to change their vote (2 reps have already committed to changing their vote): https://bit.ly/45nYCje
  • ACTION 2: Sign this petition urging Palm Beach County Commissioners to not approve Abruzzo as the new County Administrator: https://bit.ly/NotoAbruzzo
