Nurse Attack Court Hearing & CEO Response: Stephen Scantlebury, 33, appeared in court for the first time after being charged with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly attacking 67-year-old nurse Leelamma Lal at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital. Lal suffered severe injuries, including multiple broken bones in her face. During the hearing, Lal’s daughter, Cindy Joseph, tearfully described the brutal attack, mentioning that Scantlebury hurled ethnic slurs at her mother. The judge ordered Scantlebury to remain in jail without bond, although his defense team argued he should be placed under house arrest or in a mental health facility due to his apparent mental health issues. Lal’s family is considering legal action against the hospital for inadequate care, as Scantlebury was not properly restrained and was being treated in a corner room without cameras. The hospital has released statements regarding its response to the attack and its HIPAA limitations regarding Scantlebury’s care. A pretrial detention hearing is scheduled to further discuss Scantlebury’s holding arrangements. Scantlebury’s defense team noted that he had been displaying unusual behavior before the attack and sought help at the hospital. He has future court hearings scheduled for March 20 and April 10. HCA Florida Palms West Hospital CEO Jason Kimbrell sent a letter to staff addressing security concerns. The letter expressed condolences and stated that the hospital had followed all procedures. However, advocates like Meghan Marks and Lal’s family questioned the hospital’s response and security measures, particularly since the hospital isn’t a Baker Act receiving facility. Kimbrell noted that a review found no policy violations, and the hospital had implemented additional support resources. Advocates stress the need for immediate safety measures for nurses, not just future promises.
Boynton Beach Man Dies After Canopy Collapse: A 64-year-old man from Boynton Beach, Mark King, died on Monday after a large canopy collapsed on him at the Bar Harbor Regency hotel in Maine. The Bar Harbor Fire Department responded around 6:45 a.m., rescuing the trapped man, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police from Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island are conducting an investigation, with assistance from the state’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner and OSHA, who will lead the inquiry.
Facility Safety Violations: The state has ordered The Children’s Place at HomeSafe, a residential mental health facility for children, to stop admitting certain residents after a 15-year-old died by suicide there. The Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) issued a 27-page order stating that the facility violated multiple safety protocols. Specifically, it failed to properly monitor a resident with a history of depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. The resident’s suicide occurred after several lapses in communication and check-in procedures. Staff did not perform required room checks and failed to document the resident’s status correctly. Additionally, the facility contained dangerous features like door locks and large hinges, posing a risk for self-harm. The order also cited a pattern of missing person incidents at the facility. AHCA described the facility’s practices as systemic and non-compliant with safety standards. The facility had not been inspected since September 2022, before the February investigation.

Florida Insurance Petition: A petition campaign is underway in Florida to allow voters to decide on lowering homeowners insurance rates. The initiative, led by Chris Wills of the Florida Constitutional Amendment Network, aims to collect one million signatures by the end of the year for a 2026 ballot referendum. The proposal includes banning policy cancellations without a violation and requiring insurers to reduce premiums by at least 4% for policyholders who did not file a claim the previous year. The petition comes as Florida lawmakers are preparing for a new legislative session. While supporters argue that the state’s high insurance premiums need reform, critics, like Mark Friedlander from the Insurance Information Institute, warn that allowing voters to set insurance regulations could lead to instability, citing issues from a similar initiative in California in 1988.
DeSantis Launches Florida Version of DOGE: Governor Ron DeSantis has launched a Florida-specific version of the national DOGE initiative, creating a state task force aimed at reducing inefficiencies and cutting waste across state agencies, education systems, and local governments. The initiative, which will run for a year, will use artificial intelligence to audit and recommend cuts. DeSantis has also been in talks with state lawmakers to give the DOGE team enforcement power, potentially requiring local governments to comply with audits. While supporters see the plan as a way to save taxpayer money and improve government efficiency, critics, especially Democrats, worry it may lead to job cuts and disruptions. Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried criticized DeSantis for focusing on government waste after Republicans have controlled Florida’s government for decades. Lawmakers are also considering a proposal to eliminate outdated administrative rules, which will be discussed when the legislative session opens on March 4.
